How to link a domain name to a server

I'm quite new to setting up webservers without a control panel. I've looked around answered questions on the site, but with no luck. With that said I've experimented a little to resolve my problem.Basically I'm running bind9 on ubuntu 12.04 and I'm trying to bind a domain name I got from namecheap to the server. rDNS has been set up as are the nameservers with namecheap. I can obviously connect to my server with the IP which is 199.168.141.44. The domain I'm trying to get to work is www.aria-roleplay.com with nameservers ns1.aria-roleplay.com and ns2.aria-roleplay.com.My ht...

Is it possible to point a Google Cloud DNS entry to a Google Compute Engine instance?

Could I use a reference or link to my Google Compute Engine host's logical name, instead of 173.255.x.x. in:{ "additions": [ { "kind": "dns#resourceRecordSet", "name": "compute-engine-host.domain.com.", "rrdatas": [ "173.255.x.x." ], "ttl": 60, "type": "A" } ]} I don't believe that this is possible yet, but I'll see if we can get it on the list of things to build. Until then, you should be able to use the Cloud DNS API's Changes.create method to have your GCE machine add/...

How does domain registration work?

I searched on Google and Wikipedia a lot, but I could't find answers for these questions.1) What exactly registrar company do? They update an root DNS and set there IP of my DNS?2) How come the registrar can update records in the root DNS? How did they get this privilege? How could I get this privilege too?3) What exactly do we pay the registrar for? Just for sending one request to the root DNS?4) When I register a domain, am I the real (in the eye of the law) owner of the domain? How do companies (e.g. Google) protect their domain? Couldn't their registrar just say: "sorry...

How can i have the domain pointed to a droplet and all it's subdomains pointed to another droplet on digital ocean?

I have two droplets on DigitalOcean. I want example.com to point to droplet1 and *.example.com to point to droplet2. Is this possible? You'd edit the zone file. Let's say Droplet1's IP address is 192.168.0.1 and Droplet2's IP address is 192.168.0.2* IN A 192.168.0.2example.com. IN A 192.168.0.1So the wildcard points at Droplet2's IP address as a wildcard and example.com points as Droplet1's IP address. Does this help?I'm using DigitalOcean but I'm running my own DNS servers but I think the syntax would be the same using Digital Ocean's name servers. [...

Can the authoritative NS be the same as the domain served?

Let's say I have a server (DNS and other), myserver.com. Now I register a domain, mydomain.com, and set it's NS at the registrar to myserver.com - it is therefore the authoritative server, if there is any such thing. In the authoritative records for mydomain.com, can I set the NS to ns.mydomain.com?I have two domains set up like that, one works, the other one seems reluctant to propagate. So I'm wondering if there is something wrong with that - I mean how can you resolve the name of the NS when you need to resolve the name of the NS to resolve the name of the NS...And, If ye...

What is the best way to move a large and complex site (which will need extensive testing) to a new server?

We need to move a large and complex site to a new server, and we need to ensure there is minimal downtime / disruption for our members. This is what we have in mind:Create a new domain (e.g. oursite.club) on the new server, for testing purposes. (We're planning on doing this because the temporary URL that works with some hosts / sites does not appear to work on ours)Upload all existing code and import all databases to the new server.Make any changes to allow for the new server path / domain name / different database names, where necessary.Thoroughly test the .club site.Add t...

How does a webserver know the correct domain from IP address?

I have wondered: When hosting a domainname (nameservers) at one place and having a webserver for eg. wordpress another place. How do the webserver know what website I want to show if I just point the A record to the webserver IP, where there is hosted 100+ websites? When you type in a domain in your browser, the DNS server associated will resolve the IP and send a request to the server associated with that IP.A hostname is sent with the request to the server which hosts the website. The server then uses this information and determines which website to show the user.Essen...

Do I need an domain name for a website?

I want to create a website for myself that no one else will use at the moment. Do I need to get a domain name to be able to access the website remotely or can I just use the host IP address when I want to go on it? It depends on what you're looking to do. For example, Ruby on Rails and Sinatra languages can be locally hosted. So you can basically create the website without ever having to 'push' it to a domain. You'll definitely need a domain if you want to access it remotely - the domain name is basically a mask for an IP address anyway, so they're really somewhat the sa...
